Credit Reports Limitations
Not a day goes by at Nationwide Debt Reduction when someone will ask a debt consultant
how long bad debt or bad debt items will remain on their credit reports.
The following as some examples:
- If you file for bankruptcy, this will remain on your credit report for 10 years
from the date the bankruptcy is discharged by the courts.
- Tax liens on the other hand, will only remain on your credit report for 7 years.
- The same holds true for U.S. Government student loans, after various guarantor action.
- Information regarding a legal action or a judgment against you can be reported for
7 years or until the statute of limitations expires, whichever is longest.

Conversely there are no time limits for certain debt, for example:
- There is no time limit set for information reported because of an application for
more than $50,000 worth of credit life insurance.
- There are also no time limits for information listed because of an application for
employment with a salary of $20,000 or more.
Other Reports
There are two other reports that collect information about you that are free for
the asking, however most people are not aware of.
-
The first one is called the MIB or Medical information Bureau. This is a source
that insurance companies use to determine your credit worthiness for life or health
insurance. You should always know what public information is out there on you.
To obtain a free copy of your MIB report simply go to www.mib.com
and request your report.
- The second and even more fascinating report is called the LexisNexis report. This
report lists every address you have ever lived at, the address of your relatives,
any liens, judgments, bankruptcies, police reports, you have ever had under your
name. You name it, it is in here. To obtain a copy of this report, simply go to
www.lexisnexis.com and request one.
