Debt FREE!

Nationwide Debt Reduction Introduction - Part 8

8. Debt FREE!

Can you remember the last time you were completely debt free? When you did not owe anyone a dime? I do. I was 22 years old, and just got a Diners Club card sent to me unsolicited. I had just finished college, however in four years of college was never educated about the credit card debt. Now I am told they hand them out to freshman in collage within their first semester of school. What a crime.

At the time (remember age 22) I thought I could handle credit card debt. The beauty of this was I did not even to have to pay back the entire dollar amount I had spent. Next I would get unsolicited mail stating “sign here and we’ll send you a pre-approved” credit card. The rest as they say is history.

Ten years later and $55,000 in credit card debt, about to get married and start a family and I am carrying $55,000 in credit card debt into the marriage. Bad move! However, I consider myself one of the fortunate ones. My uncle had started up a debt settlement company, originally called “A Better Way” and two years later changed to Nationwide Debt Reduction, Inc. That is 2002.

I went to my uncle and pleaded with him to help me pay off this debt. I needed debt help now! I needed someone to with debt negotiation experience who knew what they were doing. Back in 2002, there may have been three companies in all that actually helped people become completely debt free. I signed on. Through Nationwide Debt Reduction’s help, I ended up paying $1,000/month (the same amount I was paying on my credit cards and getting nowhere) for 30 months and I was completely debt free. Everyone of my accounts, including some medical bills had been negotiated down to a more reasonable number.

However, that was not the end of it. At age 35 I was completely debt free. Not only that, I had an extra $1,000/month I could put to use on other things (like cribs, bunk beds, etc.) I never ever want to lose that feeling on being completely debt free ever again. I refuse to fall in what Nationwide Debt Reduction refers to as “the debt trap.” (Paying creditors each month and getting nowhere!
